Dougan was an exceptionally talented centre forward who scored at a rate of more than a goal a game for Peterborough (46 in 90) and Leicester (an incredible 41 in 76 matches) before moving to the club with which he will be forever associated, Wolves. At Molineux, he notched 123 goals in 307 appearances, including a debut hat-trick, and formed a marvellous forward partnership with John Richards.
Derek Dougan was a genuine character, a man for whom football provided a platform for other interests. He chaired the PFA, was a vocal supporter of shirt sponsorship, entered politics and later joined the UKIP; it will come as no surprise to learn that he had what is referred to as a "volatile temper".
This is a tale of a life lived to the full and one suspects it could have run to more than double the 200 pages and still been entertaining.
