It's the nature of the poker beast that occasionally, the word 'cheat' will arise. It is perhaps the game's strongest five-letter word, so before uttering it, would-be accusers had better be sure of their facts.

Instructive card-cheating videos and dvds have been with us for some time, but rarely has the topic been so well covered in written form as in Steve Forte's latest offering.
Few tomes provide as much detail about how poker cheats operate, quite possibly because few authors are as well versed on the subject as Forte, whose first book, Casino Games Protection, investigated cheating in all manner of casino games. In the intervening three and a half years, poker has become the gaming industry's glamour play, hence Forte has developed a theme he began in CGP and expanded it into a very readable stand-alone poker version.
Interestingly, up until a few years ago, most US casinos tended to ignore the poker tables when establishing their surveillance systems, ostensibly because operators didn't believe they needed to protect an area in which they had no particular monetary interest. As far as they were concerned, their interest extended as far as the rake and the rest of the cash belonged to the individuals taking part. As Forte shows, this provided the prospective cheat with a clear run at unsuspecting players.

He goes on to explain how cheats have operated for more than a century and highlights specific opportunities for cheating, particularly at bricks and mortar establishments. Apart from a security scare which occurred in 1999, technology ensures that the internet remains the safest place to play poker

Significantly though, Forte maintains you should beware of your mates when playing home and private games and he provides a helpful checklist to ensure you avoid being cheated out of your hard-earned. It's a fairly logical list which includes asking who is hosting, who is shuffling, what happens to the discards etc.

Although he explains some complicated scams, Forte employs an easy-going writing style which makes this book a joy to read; just don't try anything he describes here at home, or worse still, at the casino.
