Frequently known online by his "Jackal" moniker, poker player and instructor Phil Shaw has now put pen to paper on the subject of sit 'n' gos. The phrase "no nonsense approach" is more often than not a sloppy crutch for the journalist in dire need of an emergency clichÈ, but Shaw truly delivers a no nonsense approach. The book sets out coherent strategies that cover all aspects of the sit 'n' go genre.

One noticeable facet of Shaw's writing style is his command of the English language; so it comes as not great surprise to learn the author has a degree in English literature and language. His tone is discursive, yet loses none of its initial sharpness or clarity when it comes to delivering on theory.

Shaw's insights are complemented by useful comments on aspects of the game that can easily baffle the novice. The book chiefly concentrates on the standard sit 'n' go and presents two key strategies in heads up play - small ball and "jam and fold".

The remainder of "Secrets of Sit 'n' Gos" runs the gamut of assorted non-standard formats like six max, two table and satellites. For each eventuality, Shaw gives an overview for advancing from lower to higher stakes before wandering off into the realms of the interactive by the end of the book.

A series of hand quizzes complete Shaw's meticulous deconstruction of the game, although some readers may feel a bout of pedantry coming on and take issue with some of his answers.

One thing you cannot argue with is that this type of interactivity means the concepts illustrated are strongly reinforced. You won't forget them in a hurry. This is a sit 'n' go to make you sit up and take notice.
