Although he's been around a few years now and has probably come across many professional secrets, Slotboom helpfully reminds us that he strives to come up with "new and meaningful additions to poker literature rather than simply rehashing old stuff written by others."

He writes proficiently and his collection of articles prove to be incisive and well chosen. He certainly delivers on his pledge not to recycle received wisdom and stock viewpoints. There is a questioning air to this book which keeps you constantly on your toes and well away from any notion of complacency.

His mission is clear : " To arrive at a better understanding of how decisions are made at the poker table."

What you're able to draw on here are 60 articles that have been written over the course of a decade. There is no shortage of experience and anecdote. Revisions to these articles have been made by the author, who uses the footnotes to good effect. From turning professional in 1998, Slotboom has witnessed the advent of online poker, the bourgeoning popularity of short handed games and a shift to more loose-aggressive play and he embraces these developments.

His style is refreshing and engagingly modest; there is a genuine open mindedness about this book which add to its appeal. Slotboom also sets himself up as something of a rebel; conformity is not an option. Unconventional he may be, but you may detect a slight hint of insecurity as he compares his ideas with those of his contemporaries.

The all round guidance here is good and solid and in the true spirit of its author's intentions, the book is indeed a meaningful addition to poker literature.
