What is the definition of a 'good poker book'? It's a question we often ponder over here at Littlewoods Poker Towers for there are two distinct schools of thought. One says it must be informative and help players expand their knowledge of the game; the other says, provided it's well written, it can simply tell a good poker tale.

Poker Night by John Vorhaus falls into the latter category as he weaves and expands upon how to host a regular home poker night; after reading it, some might say it sounds considerably more difficult than becoming an exceptionally proficient player and scarper back to those strategy-filled tomes.

Recent converts to the game who require some advice on how to build and maintain your friend's interest in a successful home game will appreciate what Vorhaus has to say. Conversely however, players familiar with the game who are searching for technical snippets and strategic advice are unlikely to put Poker Night above anything written by Mike Caro.

Poker Night is meant to be entertaining, not informative. It provides advice on how people bitten by the home poker bug can become more serious players and make the transition to a more competitive level of poker, but the author's poker-related advice is readily available elsewhere and on greater detail.

Nevertheless, Poker Night is engaging and well written, full of phrases poker players will want to retain as table quips when the action might drag a little. This, in our opinion, makes Poker Nights a 'good' poker tome, provided you're not looking to improve your game by reading it.
