Dr Alan Schoonmaker is a gifted author of poker books as his most famous tome, "The Psychology of Poker", first published eight years ago and still in print, proved. This has become recommended reading for anyone with serious aspirations to make it big in the game as funnily enough, it focuses on the game's essential psychology which, the author maintains, underpins playing strategy.

The title of Schoonmaker's latest work is actually a dig at those foolish enough not to have read his earlier one. That's right - you are your own worst poker enemy for not buying it! It's an original way to gain readers' attention, but it's an approach that works.

Schoonmaker maintains that far too often players compete at levels well beyond where they should be; following a few decent results, many feel as though they can walk on water. This, of course, is nonsense because a) they end up losing their bankroll and b) they skip easier levels where they could be improving their game and making money. The author is unequivocal when saying that very, very few players can become a Brunson, Hansen, Ivey or Negreanu overnight; this game, like any other, requires regular practice.

He also dismisses some of the advice a number of professionals issue for amateurs, in particular Doyle Brunson's recommendation (in 'Super System') for relying upon your intuition to decide your what strategy you should employ. Schoonmaker concludes that because there is a wide variety of intuitive skills, which vary from player to player, a more scientific, logical approach is essential.

If you accept this, then this book could differentiate you from your peers - not least because you've been sensible enough to read it. Dr. Schoonmaker is big enough to admit he is no world class player, yet he turns in regular profits precisely because he knows which games he can win and where he's likely to take a beating. At no point does intuition or arrogance persuade him otherwise; better to make small amounts money of money frequently than lose large amounts of moolah on an infrequent basis. Many poker players will, if they're honest, recognise this arrogant (stupid?) trait which Schoonmaker dismisses. Are you your own worst enemy? Read this book and start thinking about the game before you next blow your bankroll. It's unlikely you'll blow it in too much of a hurry afterwards.
