Anyone who is fond of Vicky Coren's highly intelligent yet soothingly chatty writing style will find everything that they might hope for in her latest offering.
While lacking much of the laugh-out-loud absurdity that characterised Once More With Feeling - the book she and Charlie Skelton co-authored about their attempts to make the ultimate porn movie - there's at least as much candour and rather more emotional depth to this volume.
In For Richer, For Poorer, sub-titled A Love Affair With Poker, Vicky offers a kind of one-dimensional autobiography - a collection of reminiscences about her relationship with the game from precocious schoolgirl intrigued by her big brother's minor card school through to major tournament contender. The segments are stitched together with a series of filmic flash-forwards in which, hand by hand, she relates what was going on in her mind through vital moments in her half-million-pound EPT tournament win.
Those hoping for a scorching kiss-and-tell memoir (we have in the past noticed a widespread prurience about Ms Coren among male players) will be disappointed. Sorry boys, you'll have to fuel your own fantasies. This book is surprisingly and disarmingly frank, but on an emotional and spiritual plane, rather than a physical one.
While stylistically something of a soufflÈ, this is a much more substantial book than might at first meet the eye, and a genuinely delightful read. Cheapskates will wait for the paperback, but at a 40 percent discount at the Littlewoods Poker-sponsored section of sportsbookofthemonth.com, we suggest you'll find the hardback ample value for money.
