Since 1887, only twelve men have been designated as double internationals, capped by England at both cricket and football. CB Fry and Denis Compton are perhaps the two most famous (though the latter never played in a full soccer international: his 12 appearances took place during World War II), but Arthur Milton, the last 'official' double international deserves his place amongst this most exclusive of sporting clubs.

Mike Vockins has written a thoroughly engaging biography of a man who, after just a dozen games for Arsenal, was called up to play for England against Austria in 1951, when he was preferred to Stanley Matthews. Seven years later, Milton won his first Test cap, opening the batting at Headingly against New Zealand; a debut century earned him a place on England's Ashes tour to Australia.

Of course, it's almost certain that Milton will remain England's last double international, though one can only imagine how extensive the rewards would be for someone capable of replicating his feat today. He was able to capitalise to a degree, advertising Brylcreem under the slogan 'Men of tomorrow use Brylcreem today', but when he retired from professional sport, he became a postman in his native town of Bristol, a job he loved.

Milton, who died in 2007, is still fondly remembered by older members of Gloucestershire CC, for whom he scored more than 32,000 first-class runs and took 760 catches in a first class career which ran from 1948 to 1974. Mike Vockins finishes his book by saying: "How truly blessed have we been to know him. There'll never be another." Gloucestershire's members would undoubtedly concur.
