It's unusual for a book which focuses on how poker should be played not to make any reference to individual hands, specific cards or chip counts, although it's for this very reason that The Poker Mindset is such an interesting read. There are innumerable publications dealing with how hand A or B should be played or how precarious situation C or D may be avoided, but Taylor and Hilger concentrate instead upon the attitudes that make a successful poker player.

The book's central focus is upon the poker player's ego and sense of discipline. It shows how players can recognise when they're on tilt and when they're in danger of letting their ego dictate play to the point where it is having an adverse affect upon their chip stack.

Undoubtedly, the most significant lesson it teaches is how players should learn to desensitise themselves from money. The authors promote prudent bankroll management and constantly remind readers that poker decisions should be looked at (and made) with reference to the longer term. Becoming angry over particular hands or bad beats is a sure-fire way to see the chip stack disappear.

The Poker Mindset is full of innovative thinking: it deals with a host of matters from how you should understand your opponents' motives to life away from the poker table. If you think you know everything there is to know about poker, this is an ideal book to remind you that actually, no-one does.
